Your initial ObGyn appointment marks a significant step in taking charge of your reproductive health. It’s normal to feel a mix of emotions – anticipation, nervousness, or even apprehension. Understanding what to expect can alleviate some of those feelings.

In this blog post, we’ll delve into what you need to know about your first ObGyn appointment:

  • reasons to visit an ObGyn
  • when to attend for the first time
  • what to expect during the visit
  • what happens during a pelvic exam
  • how to prepare for your visit

Why Might You Attend an ObGyn Appointment?

An ObGyn (obstetrician-gynecologist) is a doctor who specializes in women’s health, especially the reproductive system, pregnancy, and childbirth. You might need to see one for various reasons, such as:

  • being, or planning to become, sexually active
  • irregular or painful periods
  • symptoms of a vaginal infection or a sexually transmitted infection (STI)
  • starting or changing your method of birth control
  • pregnancy or trying to get pregnant
  • if your family has a history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • approaching or going through menopause

When to Attend Your First ObGyn Appointment

Generally, doctors recommend you schedule your first ObGyn appointment between the ages of 13 and 17 or when you first become sexually active. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer; the right time can vary depending on individual circumstances and healthcare needs. Regardless of age, if you experience any gynecological issues or concerns, we advise that you seek professional medical advice as soon as possible.

What Happens During Your First ObGyn Appointment?

During your first ObGyn appointment, your healthcare provider will conduct a series of examinations to assess your reproductive health and overall well-being:

Medical history review:

Your ObGyn will ask about your medical history, including any past illnesses, surgeries, medications, allergies, and family medical history. Be prepared to provide detailed information to help your doctor better understand your overall health status.

Physical examination:

This allows your ObGyn to assess your reproductive organs’ health and detect any abnormalities. This may include different types of exams, such as:

  • A breast exam to check for any abnormalities or lumps, which could be indicative of breast cancer or other concerns.
  • Abdominal exam to check for any tenderness, masses, or abnormalities.
  • Pelvic exam to identify any signs of infection, inflammation, or other gynecological issues.

Let’s look at that last exam in some detail, because it can seem more intrusive than the others, and we don’t want you to worry.

What Happens During a Typical Pelvic Exam?

A pelvic exam is not the same as a Pap smear. It’s a more specific exam where your ObGyn visually and manually examines your reproductive organs (vagina, cervix, uterus, and ovaries). Worried about how it actually goes? Heres the step-by-step process:

  • You will be asked to lie down on an exam table with your feet in stirrups and your knees bent.
  • The ObGyn will insert a speculum into your vagina to open it and see your cervix.
  • This is when they can take a swab of cells from your cervix to test for cervical cancer (PAP smear) or STIs (if needed).
  • The ObGyn removes the speculum and inserts two gloved fingers into your vagina while pressing on your abdomen with the other hand to feel your uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.
  • They will also check your vulva, labia, clitoris, and urethra for any signs of infection, irritation, or abnormality.
  • This entire process usually only takes 1-2 minutes.

The pelvic exam might feel a bit uncomfortable, but it should not be painful. If you feel any pain or discomfort, let your doctor know immediately. Do not feel ashamed or afraid to ask them to explain what they’re doing and why – and to stop or slow down if you need a break.

And especially, please don’t worry about what your genitalia look like. Doctors have seen every variation many times – and nearly everyone’s are normal!

How Do I Prepare for My First ObGyn Appointment?

Preparing for your initial ObGyn appointment can make the experience more comfortable and productive. Here are some tips:

  • Schedule your appointment at a time when you’re not on your period – unless you have a specific concern related to your period. This will make the exam more accurate and less messy.
  • Write down a list of questions to ask your doctor – don’t try to remember them because you may well forget! And don’t be shy or embarrassed to ask anything, even if it seems silly or personal.
  • Gather your medical history and bring it with you, including any medications you’re taking, any allergies you have, any surgeries or procedures you’ve had, any chronic conditions you have, and any diseases or disorders in your family history.
  • You should also know the date of your last period and how long your cycles usually are.
  • Avoid douching, using vaginal sprays, or having sex for 24 hours before your appointment. All these can interfere with the results of some tests and exams and cause irritation or infection.
  • Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to take off and put on, as you will need to undress from the waist down for the pelvic exam.
  • Bring a friend or a family member if you want. The doctor will not mind. If you’re feeling anxious about your appointment, a trusted friend or family member can provide emotional support.
  • Arriving early for your appointment allows you time to complete any necessary paperwork and relax before meeting with your ObGyn.
